The Plant Breeders’ Rights Registry was established under Section 3(1) of the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act, 2016. The Registry has been entrusted with the following functions:

Protection of New Plant Varieties
To facilitate the protection of new plant varieties subject to such terms and conditions and in the manner as may be prescribed.

Issuance of Certificates
To issue certificates under the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act, 2016.

Maintenance of Register
To ensure the maintenance of the register of protected plant varieties.

Promotion of New Varieties
To promote the development of new varieties of plants by such measures as it thinks fit, and to protect the rights of farmers and breeders as provided under the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act, 2016.

Characterization & Documentation
To manage the characterization and documentation of varieties protected under the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act, 2016.

Collection of Statistics
To collect statistics with regard to plant varieties, including the contribution of any person at any time in the evolution or development of any plant variety in Pakistan or in any other country, for compilation and publication.

Smooth Functioning
To take all actions necessary for the smooth functioning of the Plant Breeders’ Rights Registry.
